Decades of Dedicated Practice

Decades of Dedicated Practice

Deep Roots in the Iyengar Tradition

I have spent forty five years teaching and practicing yoga, with a foundation deeply set in the Iyengar lineage. My journey took me to the Iyengar Institute in Pune, India, where I had the privilege of studying directly under B.K.S. Iyengar, along with years of study under Ramanand Patel. This level of training allows me to bring a high degree of technical knowledge to every session, ensuring that every movement is guided by a clear understanding of alignment and purpose.
Combining Art and Awareness

Combining Art and Awareness

A Life Shaped by Movement and Art

My teaching style is shaped by a wide range of disciplines, from years of classical ballet, tap, and jazz to my background in art education. I also draw heavily from Moshe Feldenkrais’ Awareness Through Movement and the work of Judith Lasater to help students explore the connection between the body, the breath, and the mind. This variety of perspectives means I offer more than just poses; I help you find a deeper path to self-discovery.
Anatomical Expertise

Anatomical Expertise

Technical Skill and Specialized Care

I believe that learning about the layers of our anatomy is a lifelong source of joy. To support the body’s health, I use specialized tools like the Melt Method for fascia hydration and Yamuna Body Rolling for better circulation and joint relief. Whether you have an athletic build or you are navigating a delicate recovery from an injury, I provide the practical tools you need to maintain and care for your body.
Compassionate and Inclusive

Compassionate and Inclusive

Supportive Guidance for Every Body

As I age, my own body teaches me something new every year, which helps me stay compassionate and attentive to my students' needs. I believe every person can move within their own range of ability. By using clear descriptions and accessible options, I make sure yoga remains a vital, inclusive practice for seniors and students of all levels, whether you join me in our Felton studio or through our online community.

Rhonda Martyn

Susan Merritt is the kind of yoga teacher you search for – thorough knowledge of anatomy, great sense of humor, experience grounded in serious study and many years of teaching, and finally a serenity of spirit to help you find what you need from your yoga practice.

Deepening Your Practice Through Awareness

I
’ve spent forty five years studying and practicing movement, blending the technical precision of Iyengar yoga with the gentle awareness of the Feldenkrais method. I guide you to look inward, helping you understand how your body, breath, and mind work together. Whether you are navigating the changes of an aging body or training for athletic performance, our sessions provide the tools you need to support your physical and emotional well-being.

A Foundation of Awareness

Learning your inner landscape

Every class starts with grounding, using a basic understanding of anatomy to respect your body's unique structure. We explore how to find balance both on and off the mat through precise alignment and mindful breathing, turning every practice into a discovery of how good your body can feel.

I describe the details of each pose to help you focus inward, building an awareness of how your body, breath, and mind are all connected.

Movement for Every Body

An inclusive, adaptive approach

I believe that every body needs movement and that everyone can move within their own range of ability. Whether you feel stiff, delicate, or are recovering from an injury, I adapt the practice to meet you exactly where you are today, creating a supportive space for everyone.

Whether your body is over-worked or under-used, yoga is an incredible toolbox for taking care of yourself.

Decades of Study

Combining tradition with movement science

My approach is built on years of training in Pune, India, under the Iyengars, as well as a long history in dance and modern movement. This blend of tradition and technical expertise creates a safe, professional environment where students of all levels can see real progress.

Learning how your body is put together is a constant discovery that brings so much joy to the way you live.

The Yoga Toolbox
I use more than just traditional poses to help you feel your best. We incorporate the Melt Method to hydrate fascia, Yamuna Body Rolling to improve circulation, and soft rollers for joint decompression. These specialized tools ensure your practice is technically sound, restorative, and tailored to your specific physical needs.
